I wish MTH went the extra mile and gave this model a proper Reading 6 chime. The whistle they used here sounds more appropriate for a Chinese locomotive.

Not sure why Lionel INSISTS on using a primer-grey smokebox on its high-end steam locomotives. The primer-grey really cheapens the look -- something you'd expect with an O-27 locomotive. It seems a crap-shoot as to whether we get the primer grey or more pleasing graphite grey color. The 2-8-0's got the graphite grey, and it looks MUCH better. METCA's D&RGW Mogul also got the graphite grey smokebox, and that too looks very nice. But the D&RGW 2-6-6-2 has the cheap primer grey smokebox, and that's a deal-breaker for me. Let's see what happens with the D&RGW Triplex. I'm hoping for the graphite smokebox... or no Triplex for me.

Sadly mine does not revolve anymore and Menards won't take it back so do you have any suggestions on how to get it fixed to revolve again, thanks.

Atlas/MTH has way better start-up and prime-mover sounds... that distinct throbbing.. sound is just like the real one. Lionel's sounds like every other Lionel no matter what the engine is.

Hi Eric. Happy 4th. Just a note for you, the NW 1776 was a duel control SD-45 and had a bulletin issued that stated "while running it with the red-white-and blue paint it was to be run short hood lead whenever practicable". Even though it had the F on the long hood I never saw it run that way and I don't think I have ever seen a photo of it running long hood forward in red-white-blue paint. (I was an N&W engineer) You ask... "what could be better?" Turn that dude around! 🙂 I have been looking for one of these models for quite a while. It was the first locomotive I ever ran. (although it was black then) If I find one the first thing I will do is turn the engineer and fireman around to face the short hood!
